McKean County Jail Overview
McKean County's sheriff and jail page lists McKean County Jail as the county detention facility tied to the Sheriff's Office. The jail is operated by the McKean County Sheriff's Office and serves local custody needs, not state prison or federal prison custody. People held there can include recent arrestees, pretrial detainees waiting for magisterial district court or Court of Common Pleas proceedings, people serving county sentences, and local holds or transports handled by the sheriff.
The official county materials list Sheriff Dan Woods, while the sheriff CRIMEWATCH portal identifies Sheriff Daniel Woods. The research treats those as the same listed official because both sources point to the Route 6 sheriff and jail operation. McKean County Jail should also not be confused with the old historic jail in Smethport. The active jail is the Route 6 county correctional institution. The former jail building near West King Street is now presented by local tourism and history sources as the Old Jail Museum.
The Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau Old Jail Museum page shows the historic former jail, not the active McKean County Jail facility.
This image belongs in the historic context only because county custody, visits, mail, and current inmate lookup issues are handled through the active McKean County Jail on Route 6.
McKean County Jail Population
The McKean County Jail population is reported in different official sources for different purposes. The Pennsylvania DOC county statistics spreadsheet for 2024 data lists the jail at 106 beds, with an average in-house daily population of 78, an average housed-elsewhere daily population of 1, 571 admissions, and 569 discharges. A separate PA DOC 2026 county prison inspection schedule lists McKean County Jail capacity as 111 and gives an inspection date of August 11, 2026.
Those figures do not create a live McKean County Jail roster. They describe capacity and average population for reporting and inspection. The same research also found Prison Policy Initiative data, sourced from the 2013 Bureau of Justice Statistics jail census, listing the McKean County jail population or average daily population as 78 in 2013. Because no public daily jail population dashboard was located, current head count should not be inferred from older annual and inspection data.
Find McKean County Jail Custody
No official public McKean County Jail roster or searchable current-inmate database was located on the county site, the sheriff page, or the official sheriff CRIMEWATCH portal. That changes the lookup process. A current custody check should begin with the jail information line, then use state notification, court docket, and records-request tools for different questions. The Pennsylvania VINELink portal can help with custody-status and release notifications, but it is not a complete county jail roster.
- Call McKean County Jail at 814-887-2333 with the person's full legal name, date of birth if known, and approximate arrest date.
- Check VINELink for custody status and notification registration when release or transfer alerts matter.
- Search Pennsylvania UJS Case Search for the docket, complaint, bail, court dates, and charge history.
- Use the sheriff CRIMEWATCH Right-to-Know form when a booking record, jail record, or other sheriff record is needed.
- If the person was sentenced to state prison, use the PA DOC locator instead of the county jail phone.
The lookup path depends on custody type. McKean County Jail covers local county custody. The Pennsylvania DOC inmate and parolee locator covers state-sentenced inmates and parolees, and the BOP locator covers federal inmates, including people held at Federal Correctional Institution McKean. A person may move from the jail to a state prison after sentencing, but that transfer changes the correct search system.
McKean County Jail Contact
The county lists the jail and sheriff information in the same official department area. Use the jail phone for practical custody questions and facility questions. Use sheriff or county Right-to-Know routes for records that are not available online. Staff may not release every detail by phone, especially private information, housing details, medical information, or records restricted by Pennsylvania law.

For sheriff-hosted records, the McKean County Sheriff's Office CRIMEWATCH Right-to-Know form asks for requester identity, contact information, a detailed description, and copy or inspection choices.
McKean County Jail Visits
The official McKean County Jail visiting-hours page gives a narrow in-person schedule and also states that offsite video visitation is available. County jail visits are different from Pennsylvania DOC state prison visits and different from BOP federal visits. Visitors should confirm the person's custody status before travel because there is no public county roster to check at the door.
| Day | Hours | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Tuesday | 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM | In-person |
| Saturday | 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM | In-person |

ICSolutions/The Visitor materials inspected for McKean County say visitors must register at no cost before participating and must define the inmate relationship. The vendor page states that offsite video visitation can be used from a Windows computer, Android device, iPhone, or iPad with ICS Mobile. The inspected page listed offsite video visits at $10 for 25 minutes and stated that internet-connectivity problems during offsite visits are not refunded.
Note: Confirm custody and visit approval with McKean County Jail before traveling to the Route 6 facility.
McKean County Jail Mail
McKean County Jail uses different routing for personal letters and legal or approved mail. Personal letters are no longer accepted at the Smethport jail address. They must go through JailATM and are scanned so the person in custody can view them on tablets. Legal mail, in-house mail, approved publications, and distributor orders still use the Route 6 mail address published by the county.
| Service | Provider / Detail |
|---|---|
| Personal mail | JailATM / McKean County Jail / Inmate ID # / P.O. Box 16120 / Jonesboro, AR 72401 |
| Legal mail and approved publications | McKean County Jail / Inmate Name / 17016 Route 6 / Smethport, PA 16749 |
| Packets needing inmate completion | Hand-deliver to McKean County Jail for inspection before delivery. |
| Money deposit | Jail lobby kiosk, accesscorrections.com, or icsolutions.com. |
Corrections Officers do not accept money. The county says money must be placed in the lobby kiosk or online through Access Corrections or ICSolutions. The research did not locate a county-published phone rate schedule, commissary fee table, or tablet fee schedule, so those amounts should be verified through the jail or the vendor before payment. Family or friends may bring only white underclothing in original packaging, a watch valued under $50, and a wedding ring.
McKean County Jail Intake
McKean County did not publish a detailed booking workflow on the inspected jail pages. Based on the research, local arrests may be made by municipal police, Pennsylvania State Police, sheriff deputies on warrants, probation or parole authorities, or another law-enforcement agency. When local detention is ordered or needed, the person may be taken to McKean County Jail. The court side then moves through preliminary arraignment, bail decisions, and later docket events.
- Pretrial detainee
- A person held before case disposition because release has not occurred or bail has not been satisfied.
- County sentence
- A local sentence served in the county jail rather than a state prison placement.
- Detainer
- A hold or notice from another authority that may affect release even when the local case changes.
For court status after an arrest, UJS Case Search is usually more useful than a custody phone call. Dockets can show complaint numbers, OTN references, bail status, next hearings, and dispositions when public access allows. For custody and release timing, call the jail. For a broader current and past custody route, the McKean County jail inmate records page separates jail, court, state DOC, federal, and notification channels.
About McKean County Jail
PA DOC county-statistics program indicators for 2024 list McKean County Jail as having drug and alcohol programs, education programs, social services programs, counseling services, and re-entry programs. The spreadsheet uses yes or no indicators and does not describe schedules, providers, class names, or eligibility, so program access should be confirmed through the jail. The same research found a practical public-defender detail: people incarcerated at McKean County Jail can apply for the Public Defender by request slip from the jail to be faxed to the office.
County prison oversight comes from Pennsylvania rules as well as local operation. The PA DOC Office of County Inspections and Services inspects county correctional institutions under Title 37 Chapter 95, but PA DOC says its role is inspection oversight and not daily operational control of county jails. For McKean County Jail concerns, facility channels and county prison authority channels matter. For county-level inmate population context, the McKean County inmate population page separates the local jail count from state prison commitment counts and the federal prison population in Lewis Run.
